Twirly Girls

Frequently Asked Questions

I'm nervous...

We have all felt that way at the mention of a Pole.  We’ve all imagined what we think a Pole stands for.  Dark smokey rooms, nude women, intoxicated men, typical strip club… right? Well, Pole has come a long way, just like women have!  Don’t let shape, size, age, or fitness level stop you from trying something so empowering.  Each class is held in a supportive, friendly manner and we do everything we can to make you feel comfortable. The room is strictly private with no viewers, no windows, no nudity and no men! I’ve seen women tear up at accomplishing something they never felt possible. I promise after your first class if you honestly feel you cannot do this class, I will REFUND your money!

Am I strong enough to do Pole?

Never underestimate the strength of a woman!  Many of the moves in Pole require technique over strength, and most moves can be modified to accommodate your proficiency level as you build strength.  Courses incorporate training tips to help improve your weaknesses.  And, remember, some of the pole dancers you may have seen have dance and gymnastic experience.  Please never compare what you can do to what they are doing!  We each bring something unique and amazing to our practice!

What should I wear to class?

You’re here for a workout, so wear what you would to the gym.  Skin on Pole sticks, so once you learn more Pole work you should wear shorts or pants you can roll up to your thighs. The main thing is to wear something you will feel comfortable in.  Shoes are optional—however, please plan to put on any shoes you plan to wear in the class after you arrive at the studio to avoid tracking in outdoor dirt. Follow these 3 tips below to ensure that your session is the best it can be!

-No buttons or zippers (Metal will scratch the pole)
-Rings and bracelets should also be removed in order to avoid damage to your jewelry and the pole.
-Avoid apply body lotions prior to class, as it will make the pole slippery and dangerous.

Will I get bruised and sore from class?

I will be honest with you--bruising often comes with Pole tricks (improper technique) and with climbing (as the pole pinches the skin).  YES, you will have bruises and YES you will get sore.  Any time you start a new type of workout you will experience some type of muscle soreness.  Icing after a workout or soaking in a nice hot tub with Epsom salts will help with muscle soreness; arnica cream from any health food store can help with the bruises.   Most students do not experience bruising and soreness on an ongoing or consistent basis.

Can I bring my own music?

Absolutely!  I want you to find that song that makes you want to move!  We all have our own type of music to dance to!  Bring either a CD or an Ipod.

Can I wear heels to class?

Please don’t try to break in a new pair of heels in class. You’ll only end up with blisters and sore feet.  If you have never worn stilettos do not wear them to Pole until you get used to wearing them.  Just wearing stilettos can be a challenge.  Make sure you do not wear good leather shoes or expensive shoes.  The Pole will tear up fine leather.  Wear shoes you are comfy in.  Shoes must have straps to hold the shoe on. We will go over shoes in class.  I teach barefoot.

What if I've done Pole before?

Continuing students (those who are not new to pole fitness but who are new to Twirly Girls) will be independently assessed by an instructor and placed at the correct level. It is recommended that continuing students contact Bel in advance to describe their experience.

How is Twirly Girls different?

For one, we don’t just teach tricks - Twirly Girls teaches a cohesive curriculum that leaves students with the independence and the confidence to complete entire routines.  We also have a passion for empowering women.  Students of Twirly Girls draw on the wisdom and energy of Bel, who has spent years providing intuitive, supportive empowerment to women in the form of fitness.  Finally, students learn at their own pace, and according to their own limitations.  Modifications can be made to each student’s program that address their own preferences, abilities; and we never forget that you’re here to have fun!
